Learning with iPad - Flash Script Challenge

Context

Storyist is a powerful tool for planning and formatting scripts, but even a short activity can help students understand how to structure dialogue and stage directions. This exercise gives them just enough time to be spontaneous and creative, without overthinking, while still learning industry-standard script conventions.

Preparation and Flow

Do note that Storyist is an app on the iPad and Mac. There is a 14 day trial before payment is required. So do consider how this might work for you.

Open Storyist – Show students how to start a new screenplay project.

Give the prompt – Example: “Two friends meet after not seeing each other for 10 years.”

Plan quickly (2 min) – Decide on setting, characters, and mood.

Write (6 min) – Students type their short scene in script format (character names, dialogue, stage directions).

Share (2 min) – Volunteers read their mini-scenes aloud.

Possible Extension

Expand the scene into a longer short film script over several lessons.

Record a dramatic reading using Clips or GarageBand.
