Context
This performance-based activity builds confidence in spoken English while allowing students to explore imaginative content. By using a structured, ready-made script, students can focus on fluency, delivery, and teamwork without the pressure of generating content. It’s an ideal speaking task that supports oral communication skills through fun, low-stakes performance.
Preparation and Flow
1. Set the Scene
Begin by introducing the activity: “Today, you're becoming fantasy news anchors! Your task is to rehearse and record a short, fun news broadcast for a magical world.”
Briefly explain the four segments:
- Intro
- Sports
- Weather
- Today’s Top News
Let them know the script is provided. They just need to bring it to life!
2. Group Students and Assign Roles
Put students into groups of 3–4.
Each student will take on one or more segments.
Give them printed or digital copies of the script.
3. Rehearse the Script
Groups read through the script together.
Encourage:
- Clear pronunciation
- Expressive delivery
- Teamwork and timing
- Practising multiple times
Optional: Allow time to add props or simple gestures.
4. Record the Broadcast
Students use Clips or iMovie on the iPad to record their segment.
They can do it in one take or edit short parts together.
Remind them to:
- Face the camera
- Speak clearly and confidently
- Support each other on screen
5. Share and Celebrate
Let groups present their videos to the class or upload to a shared folder
Encourage light peer feedback—e.g. “What was your favourite part of this team’s news?”
Wrap up with a reflection: “What makes someone a good presenter?” or “How did it feel to be a news anchor?”
Possible Extension
Create Your Own Segment: Students write and perform an original segment (e.g. Entertainment, Travel, Creatures Report). Great for creative writing and advanced groups.
Behind-the-Scenes Interview: After recording, students film a “cast interview” where they reflect on the experience and what they learned as news anchors.
