Back to School: Two Buses, One Lesson

The most important technology decision you'll make this school year isn't which app to use. It's the role technology will play in your classroom.

Every school year begins with expectations. Some are spoken aloud. Others are quietly communicated through the work we ask students to do every day. When teachers model meaningful work, researching, creating, designing, wondering, sharing, they transform technology into a tool for higher-order thinking and deep learning. It's not just about screen time, it's about the quality of that time and the habits we demonstrate. The conversation shouldn't be about screen time alone.

Rather than asking students to put technology away, perhaps we should expect more from it and from ourselves. Let’s raise the bar by inviting students to explore, design, collaborate, document, reflect, and create. When we do, technology becomes more than a device. It becomes a bridge to curiosity, deeper understanding, and authentic contribution.

Let me share one afternoon at a nature preserve that reminded me just how powerful those classroom expectations can be.
