What is an ecosystem? | Knowledge and thinking in Kindergarten 2 through audiovisual projects

Second-grade students at Simón Bolívar School explored different ecosystems. But this popped out a question for them: What is an ecosystem? We did research together, looked at different examples and characteristics, so each student could come up with their own answer and understanding and share the knowledge they built through this activity. Then, using iMovie and Clips, the students recorded themselves and created an audiovisual project in which each one had the opportunity to contribute their own definition of an ecosystem.

Stages of the journey:

  • First, we researched and shared our views and thoughts on the topic. We discussed whether we knew the places where different animals live and shared their characteristics.
  • We compared the characteristics of different animals and the places where they live.
  • We looked at images and photographs of the landscapes of each ecosystem and identified what makes each place ideal for the animals that inhabit it.
  • Finally, when the children came up with their conclusion, they were excited to share it in a video. So they recorded themselves and asked themselves, “What is an ecosystem?”

Significant achievements and lessons learned

  • Digital communication: the iPad was used as a tool to create and share their opinions.
  • Empowerment: students developed greater confidence to express themselves in front of their peers.
  • Exploring the world: they developed a greater awareness of the environment around us.

It is important to remember that in the future, the world will be in the hands of those who are in our classrooms today. We raise awareness in a different and interesting way for them, using technology as an essential resource to take their words elsewhere.
