Protect Your Ears: A Creative Digital Campaign with iPad

1. Description

A student-centred Science learning experience that helps Year 4 pupils understand how everyday habits and exposure to harmful sounds can affect ear health.

Using the 5E instructional model, pupils explore real-life situations, identify risks to their ears, discuss ways to protect their hearing, and communicate their understanding through a creative digital awareness campaign.

The lesson integrates iPad, iMovie and GarageBand to transform health and science concepts into meaningful multimedia creations.

Engage : “Your Ears Are Precious!”

Pupils watch a short video or scenario showing everyday activities involving the ears.

The teacher poses the driving question:

“Your ears are precious, but what everyday things can damage them?”

Pupils share their initial ideas and experiences.

Explore : Spot the Risk

Working in groups, pupils explore different everyday situations involving ear care.

They identify whether each activity is Safe or Risky and discuss:

• What is happening?
• Could this activity harm the ear?
• Why might it be harmful?

Pupils use iPad to record, annotate or organise their ideas.

Explain : What Happens to Our Ears?

The teacher facilitates a discussion about how the ears can be affected by:

• Very loud sounds
• Prolonged exposure to loud sounds
• Putting objects such as cotton buds or pencils inside the ear
• Unsafe listening habits

Pupils connect the everyday examples from the Explore activity with the scientific explanation.

Elaborate : Create a “Protect Your Ears” Campaign

Pupils work collaboratively to create a short digital awareness campaign.

Using iMovie, pupils create a short video that communicates:

The risk → What can happen → How to protect your ears

Using GarageBand, pupils create or record:

• Voice-over narration
• Background music
• Sound effects
• A short ear-health jingle or song

Pupils have creative freedom to decide how they want to communicate their message.

Evaluate :

Before leaving, pupils respond to three short prompts:

1. Name one everyday activity that can harm the ears.
2. Explain one possible effect on ear health.
3. State one way you can protect your ears.

Pupils may respond using text, drawing or a short voice recording on iPad.

9. Closing

Pupils share one new thing they have learned about protecting their ears.

The teacher reinforces the key message:

“Our ears help us learn, communicate and enjoy the world around us. Protect your ears today so you can keep hearing tomorrow.”

The completed digital campaigns can be shared with classmates or the wider school community to promote healthy listening habits.
