Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Identify complementary, supplementary and conjugate angles.
  • State the relationship between the angles:
  • Complementary angles → sum of 90°
  • Supplementary angles → sum of 180°
  • Conjugate angles → sum of 360°
  • Apply these relationships to solve problems involving unknown angles.
  • Identify examples of these angle relationships in real-life situations.

Activity 1: Angle Mystery 🔍 – ENGAGE

Time: 5 minutes

Teacher's Activity

The teacher displays several pictures of everyday objects or situations, such as:

  • a ladder leaning against a wall,
  • corners of a table or window,
  • intersecting lines,
  • a clock,
  • objects forming a complete turn.

The teacher asks:

“Can you find pairs of angles in these pictures?”

Follow-up questions:

  • What do you notice about these angles?
  • Do any two angles add up to 90°?
  • Do any two angles add up to 180°?
  • Can you find angles that make a complete turn?

Students' Activity

Students observe the pictures and discuss their ideas with a partner.

Purpose

To activate students' prior knowledge and create curiosity about different relationships between angles.


Activity 2: Discover the Rule 🧩 – EXPLORE

Time: 15 minutes

Teacher's Activity

The teacher provides students with a set of angle cards/pairs.

Students work in pairs to investigate the relationships between the angles.

Students' Activity

Students complete three challenges:

Challenge 1 – 90° : Match the pairs of angles that add up to 90°.

Challenge 2 – 180° : Match the pairs of angles that add up to 180°.

Challenge 3 – 360° : Match the pairs of angles that add up to 360°.

Students record their findings in a table:

Teacher's Role

The teacher circulates around the classroom and asks guiding questions rather than immediately giving the definitions.

For example:

“What do you notice about all the pairs in this group?”

“What is the total when you add these two angles?”

“Can you predict the name of this relationship?”

Purpose

Students discover the mathematical relationships themselves before the formal explanation.


Activity 3: Angle Hunt – Find and Capture! 📸 – EXPLAIN

Time: 10 minutes

Students' Activity

Students work in pairs.

They look around the classroom and find examples of angle relationships in real-life objects or situations.

They need to find:

  1. A pair of angles that add up to 90°
  2. A pair of angles that add up to 180°
  3. A pair of angles that add up to 360°

Students:

  • take a photo of each example;
  • ensure the relevant angles are clearly visible;
  • label each photo with the type of angle relationship and its measurement;
  • share their findings with the class.

Teacher's Explanation

After students have shared their examples, the teacher provides the formal explanation through a short instructional video/presentation.

The teacher consolidates:

Complementary angles: Two angles are complementary when their sum is 90°.

Supplementary angles: Two angles are supplementary when their sum is 180°.

Conjugate angles: Two angles are conjugate when their sum is 360°.

The teacher highlights that students can identify the relationship by looking at the sum of the angles.


Activity 4: Angle Detective 🕵️ – ELABORATE

Time: 5 minutes

This activity is a good place to integrate Apple Numbers and mathematical problem-solving.

Students' Activity

Students work in pairs and open the attached Numbers spreadsheet.

They complete the missing information by entering the given angle values and using formulas to determine:

  • the missing angle;
  • the sum of the angles;
  • the type of angle relationship.

For example:

Angle A = 35°
Angle B = ?
If A and B are complementary:
B = 90° − A

Students then identify the relationship as complementary.

Similar problems can be provided for 180° and 360°.

Purpose

Students move from simply recognising the relationships to applying mathematical rules to find unknown angles.


Activity 5: Properties of Angles Worksheet ✏️ – ELABORATE

Time: 15 minutes

Students' Activity

Students individually complete the worksheet.

The questions should include a mixture of:

  • identifying the type of angle relationship;
  • finding missing angles;
  • completing equations;
  • applying the properties to diagrams;
  • solving simple real-life problems.

For example:

Two angles are complementary. One angle is 37°. Find the other angle.
or
Two angles are conjugate. One angle is 145°. Find the other angle.

Teacher's Role

The teacher monitors students' work and provides scaffolding to students who need support.

Students who finish early can be given extension questions involving multiple steps.


Activity 6: Exit Ticket 🎫 – EVALUATE

Time: 10 minutes

Students independently answer a short set of questions to demonstrate their understanding.

Suggested questions:

Question 1

Two angles have a sum of 90°.

What is the relationship between the angles?

Question 2

One of two supplementary angles is 68°.

Find the other angle.

Question 3

Two conjugate angles have one angle measuring 215°.

Find the other angle.

Question 4

In one sentence, explain the difference between:

  • complementary angles,
  • supplementary angles,
  • conjugate angles.

Teacher's Activity

The teacher discusses the answers with the students and addresses common misconceptions.
