iPad Foundations - Philippines

iPad gives teachers and students flexible ways to learn, create and share. It can become a notepad, sketchbook, camera, production studio or even a window into another world -  all within one device.

Getting to know some of iPad’s foundational features can make everyday classroom workflows simpler while opening up new possibilities for learning. In the iPad Foundations for Teachers workshop, we explored some of these foundations - from personalizing and navigating iPad to accessing learning materials, creating in different ways and using built-in tools to make learning visible.

This post brings together additional resources to help you revisit the features and workflows explored during the session.

🎨 Personalize your iPad

One of the strengths of iPad is the ability to personalize how it looks and works to suit the person using it.

During the workshop, we customized the Home Screen by rearranging apps, creating folders and adding widgets to keep useful tools and information close at hand. We added frequently used apps to the Dock and explored how Control Center can become a practical classroom toolkit, with quick access to features such as Timer, Voice Memos and Screen Recording.

These simple changes can help create a workspace that supports the routines, tools and information you use every day.

📱 Navigate your iPad

Knowing a few simple ways to navigate iPad can make it much easier to find what you need, move between apps and access learning materials.

During the workshop, we used Spotlight to quickly find apps, files and information, as well as complete calculations, conversions and definitions.

We explored Full Screen Apps, Windowed Apps and Exposé, looking at different ways to open, resize and arrange apps and quickly move between them. Windowed Apps can also make it easier to work across two or more apps — for example, viewing information in Safari while taking notes.

We then explored the Files app, where files and documents from different locations can be accessed and organized in one place. We also looked at how services such as Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive can be accessed directly through Files once their apps are installed and you are signed in.

📁  Create with Notes

One of the strengths of iPad is that there isn’t just one way to capture an idea or add information.

During the workshop, we used Notes to explore a range of ways students and teachers can create and communicate. We entered text using the onscreen keyboard and Dictation, added drawings with Apple Pencil or a finger, inserted photos and explored audio recordings with transcripts.

We also used the document scanner in Notes to turn a physical document into a digital PDF.

Many of these ways of adding content are available across other Apple apps, including Pages, Numbers, Keynote and Freeform. Providing different ways to capture and communicate ideas can give learners more choice in how they demonstrate their thinking and understanding.

✏️ Reflect and Connect with Photos and Markup

Sometimes a simple workflow can have lots of possibilities for learning.

In our final activity, we used Camera, Photos and Markup to create a visual reflection capturing one thing we learned or planned to use in the classroom.

The same workflow can be used by students to photograph their work and annotate feedback, capture observations from an experiment, label features of an image or diagram, or add arrows, shapes, text and drawings to explain their thinking.

It is a simple example of how built-in iPad tools can help make learning and thinking visible.
