Formative Assessment: Making Learning Visible with iPad
Formative assessment is one of the most powerful ways to improve learning, not because it grades students, but because it guides them. When teachers can quickly see what students understand (and what they don’t yet), feedback becomes timely, learning becomes visible, and instruction becomes responsive.
To provide a creative structure, I created a Formative Assessment Keynote resource you can use and share with students directly on iPad.
Each slide includes an interactive template or idea that encourages students to show their thinking visually and reflectively through drawing, labeling, voice recording, or using shapes and images. These activities go beyond multiple-choice checks, they let students create to demonstrate understanding.
Here are a few ways to make the most of this resource:
💡 Share with students once and use multiple times!
Quickly share the Keynote file and students can keep it in their own Keynote app and use it throughout the year to document learning progress.
🎨 Leverage creativity to assess understanding.
Students can sketch ideas, build concept maps, annotate photos, or record reflections right in Keynote transforming formative checks into moments of creative expression.
📱 Use Apple Classroom to monitor and guide.
View student progress in real time, lock screens during key moments, or instantly project student examples for discussion.
🗂️ Revisit and reflect.
Because everything lives within one Keynote file , teachers and students can easily return to earlier pages to track growth, add new learning, or compare progress over time.
Formative assessment doesn’t have to feel like one more task on iPad, it becomes a natural part of the creative learning process.
Please share how you adapt these ideas for your own classroom! How are you using iPad creativity tools to make learning visible?

I love how students are able to choose how they share their knowledge with all of the tools of Keynote! Thanks for sharing! I am going to use your Keynote to do another formative assessment over slope-intercept form with my Algebra 1 students!
