Learning with iPad - Have a bit of fun with Art

Context

Many schools have wanted to explore how to get into animation and augmented reality without it involving too heavy on the tech e.g. learning how to use 3D software and pricey payments to app. Hence, we are looking at 2 apps that might make this happen. Keynote and Artivive.

Preparation and Flow

There are ways to get into this. The first app is Keynote, which is natively available on your iPad. The other relates to Artivive as a web-based app. Go check out their offerings here. With Artivive, you can either ask students to sign up (and there is a registration and subscription needed), or have the teacher get into this.

You can download the Artivive app on your iPhone or iPad to take a look at the sample here.

Let's begin with drawing on Keynote. Many of us are not really good at drawing off-hand, so we will use tracing as an option to overcome our introductory jitters. Let's begin.

  1. Get students to open up Keynote
  2. Choose a basic white template and create a new blank slide
  3. Insert the desired image to trace e.g. your own portrait
  4. Reduce the opacity and lock the image and start drawing over the image
  5. When you are done, unlock and delete the original image
  6. You are now left with your original drawing. Go ahead and animate it with line draw
  7. Next export the slide with your animated line draw out as a video

Now let's move into Artivive.

  1. Log into Artivive Bridge
  2. Insert the original anchor image you used to trace, this will be the image users will scan to activate the line draw animation
  3. Upload and reposition the exported line draw video
  4. Save

Your masterpiece is now ready for anyone with the app to scan and enjoy how your art comes to live.

Possible Extension

You do not need to use your original image as an anchor. The anchor is only used to trigger the video and other effects you put into the art. For instance, your portrait could grow into a frame on a newspaper mock-up creating a "Harry Potter" magic moment. I have posted another idea that is linked to this. Do check it out.
