Context
As a humanities and language teacher, I love to tap on many online periodicals where I could get my students to read and analyse them. However some of these sites can be rather distracting with many advertisements. Hence, it would be ideal when we could extract just the text by removing all distractions, To do that we can utilize the ‘Show Reader’ function found in Safari URL bar. The Reader function removes all distractions which helps with focused reading. And when the article is in reader mode, we can further convert it into PDF and share and annotate. We may even include instructions within the pdf and turning it into an assignment.
Preparation and Flow
1. To prepare for this, open a supported site in Safari and choose ‘Show Reader’ function .
2. When in reader mode, take a screen shot of the page.
3. Select ‘Full Page’ when in screenshot mode to convert the page into pdf. Share pdf in Files, Goodnotes, Books, Freeform, Note, Pages for further modifications.
4. Teachers and students may annotate on the PDF by adding instructions or notes to the article.
Possible Extension
That said, it is a great way to pull out readings and instantly annotate on them to take learning on the fly. Seeing and annotating something is a quick way to think about a piece of information, and build lenses and connections.
