Jennifer Orton (@jorton) and I met at ADE institute in 2023 and have been working on compiling lessons for high school teachers using MacBooks or iPads in class. Jennifer uses iPads and I use MacBooks, and in our collaboration, we realized that small adjustments can be made to apply the lessons in each environment. Over the next 30 days, we’ll post one lesson idea each day!
Lesson Idea #2: Writing a Children's Book
One of our Dual Enrollment teachers came to me with an idea to give students an alternative assignment to writing their essay. I helped her develop a list of excellent options for her students. One of the most popular ideas chosen by the students was to turn their essay into a children's book. The students did their work in Pages using a blank book template. They conferenced with the teacher and their classmates throughout the writing process to gain feedback on their work. When completed, the students exported their work to share with the teacher.
The teacher expressed afterwards that she felt that her students created some of their best work by giving them this choice in writing format.

Great way to inspire the writing process while integrating technology! Creating a children’s book is not only engaging for students but also adds a creative dimension to their writing. Thanks for the lesson description and examples!
