Apple Classroom

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can help me?!

I'm trying to sync a class full of iPads with my Apple Classroom platform but it won't even appear on the iPads for it to connect.

I have done the following and still isn't working:

  • Mac and iPads on same wifi network
  • bluetooth turned on
  • signed out and back in with Apple ID
  • IOS is up to date with newest version

Am I doing something wrong? can someone help...

Thank you!

🔍 Key Things to Check & Do:

1. Are you using Apple School Manager (ASM) with MDM?

If you're using Apple Classroom in a managed school environment (which is the intended use), the iPads must be enrolled in MDM and the classes set up via Apple School Manager.

  • Manual setup without MDM will not allow Classroom to auto-populate classes.
  • If you're trying to use Classroom in a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) scenario without MDM/ASM, only local classes will work (and even those can be finicky).

✅ Action:

  • If you’re using MDM: Check that classes are correctly set up in Apple School Manager and pushed to student devices.
  • If not: Use local classes, but be sure to create them manually on the teacher’s device and have students join via code.

2. Did you create a local class on the teacher's device?

If you’re not using MDM, you must create a class manually in Classroom on your Mac or iPad.

  • On your Mac (teacher device), open Classroom > Create New Class
  • Once that class is created, students should see an invite prompt on their iPads if they are within Bluetooth range and on the same Wi-Fi.

3. Check Permissions (Settings > Privacy & Security)

Make sure the Classroom app has the right permissions:

  • On the iPads, go to:
  • Settings > Privacy & Security > Classroom
  • and allow student device discovery or screen observation, if prompted.

4. Reset Network Settings (if still stuck)

Sometimes a network setting gets stuck:

  • On iPads:
  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Network Settings
  • (⚠️ This will erase saved Wi-Fi passwords.)

5. Are you using a Personal Hotspot or Guest Wi-Fi?

Some guest Wi-Fi networks or personal hotspots block Bonjour and multicast, which Apple Classroom needs.

  • Use a school-managed Wi-Fi network with multicast and Bonjour enabled.

6. Check Date and Time

All devices should have automatic date & time enabled.

  • Settings > General > Date & Time > Toggle Set Automatically to ON

🧪 Quick Test (No MDM Scenario)

Try this:

  1. On teacher Mac or iPad: Open Classroom, tap + to create a class manually.
  2. On student iPads: Make sure Bluetooth is on, Classroom is installed, and the device is awake.
  3. The students should get a pop-up to join the class.
  4. Accept it on both sides and test connection.

📞 Still Not Working?

If everything above checks out and it’s still not appearing:

  • Try restarting all devices
  • Try a test class with only 1 iPad
  • Try using Classroom on iPad (instead of Mac), which sometimes behaves more consistently for discovery.
